I have just celebrated my 60th birthday, and a walk round the Commonwealth War graves at Chungkai and Kanchanaburi, really drives home how young these poor men were. Most were in their early 20s, barely out of their teens. Their treatment at the hands of the Imperial Japanese Army was nothing short of barbaric, inhumane, sickening, to be honest with you,I have no words strong enough to convey the Japanese cruelty.
Walking amongst the neatly kept rows of headstones you are shocked by the amount of nameless soldiers who died in this tropical heat, how bad must a man's body be if no one, not even his comrades can identify him. Such a beautiful but sad place, there is a lesson for us all here.
